This policy aims to establish comprehensive standards for farm access to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable collection of milk from our suppliers. These standards align with industry best practices and ensure compliance with National Milk’s operational and safety requirements.
This policy applies to all farms supplying milk to National Milk. It outlines the requirements for road access, driveway conditions, vat safety, and general farm access to ensure seamless and secure milk collection operations.
1. Road Access
1.1 All-Weather Roads
• Farms must be accessible via all-weather roads suitable for heavy vehicles to ensure uninterrupted milk collection.
• Roads must be maintained to prevent disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions.
1.2 Maintenance and Upkeep
• Roadways leading to the farm must be regularly maintained, including grading, repairing potholes, and ensuring proper drainage.
2. Driveway Conditions
2.1 Driveway Specifications
• Driveways must be constructed to support the weight and size of milk tankers, with a minimum width and a surface capable of handling heavy vehicle traffic.
• Driveways should be free from sharp turns, steep inclines, and obstructions that could hinder the movement of milk collection vehicles.
2.2 Signage and Lighting
• Clear signage must be installed to direct tanker drivers to the milk vat area, visible both day and night.
• Driveways and surrounding areas must be well-lit to ensure safe access during early morning or late evening collections.
3. Vat Safety and Access
3.1 Vat Location
• Milk vats should be positioned to allow easy and safe access for milk collection, with clear areas around the vats.
• The vat area should be accessible without requiring complex maneuvers by the tanker.
3.2 Safety Standards
• The area around the milk vat must comply with safety standards, including proper lighting, non-slip surfaces, and clear markings.
• Safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency contact information should be readily available in the vat area.
3.3 Hygiene and Sanitation
• The vat and surrounding area must be kept clean and free from contaminants. Regular cleaning schedules should be adhered to, ensuring compliance with hygiene standards.
4. General Farm Access
4.1 Farm Entry Points
• Entry points to the farm must be wide enough to accommodate large vehicles, with gates that are easy to open and close, not obstructing the path of the milk tanker.
• Any security measures (e.g., locks, codes) must be communicated to the milk collection team in advance.
4.2 Emergency Access
• Farms must have an emergency access plan in place, ensuring that emergency services can reach the farm quickly if needed.
• Emergency contact numbers and procedures should be clearly displayed in prominent locations on the farm.
National Milk, or their nominated transport representatives, reserve the right to inspect farm access conditions periodically to ensure compliance with this policy. Non-compliance may result in delayed or suspended milk collection until issues are resolved.
This policy will be reviewed annually and may be amended as necessary to reflect changes in industry standards, regulatory requirements, or operational needs.
